Harry Redknapp

On the blog we published a post about a Scottish man, and a American man. Now moving onto a Englishman. In England the favourite sport is football which Americans call soccer. Anyway like Alex Ferguson a manager a guy that has been in football for what seems like forever. It's Harry Redknapp.

Harry Redknapp is a former footballer who has had a long and illustrious career in football. He is currently the manger of English Premier League team Portsmouth. He has a son Jamie Redknapp who also played football. He is a uncle to the popular Englishman Frank Lampard. He won Portsmouth the FA Cup in 2008. This was his first real taste of glory.

Redknapp was born in London in 1947. He supported Arsenal as a boy his father used to sneak him in under the turnstiles. He came through the youth set up at West Ham to become a footballer. He was a pacy winger. He signed terms on his 17th birthday and made 150 appearances scoring a total of 8 goals. In 1972 he was prized away from London by Bournemouth he spent a total of four years at the club making over 100 appearances. He was bought by Brentford in 1976 and had a brief spell as assistant manager in the North American Soccer League which is now defunct he worked for the Seattle Sounders and yes that is a defunct club as well.

He's managed Bournemouth [former club].
West Ham United [former club].
Portsmouth First spell.
Southampton, Portsmouth's rivals.
Portsmouth current.

I think it's obvious by now that Redknapp is not a very respectable man. OK let's look at his first spell in management.

Redknapp took up his major job at Bournemouth he was fresh faced and new to the scene. When Bournemouth went into Division 3 Redknapp was charged with getting them out of that place. He failed to achieve the aim set out though and only just survived relegation.  There was some joy for the new boy though as they cooked up a stir in the Cup.

In 1990 Redknapp watched the World Cup being held in Italy. After this Redknapp crashed his car into a Bournemouth director instantly killing the man. Redknapp also was hurt and now cannot smell. In 1992 he quit the club as the finances had been very poor.

OK so in his first job he avoided relegation when he supposed to get them promoted so he failed at that. He killed someone in 1990 and then quit the club two years later after not developing the club at all. Let's look at his next spell.

In 1998 West Ham finished in eighth he had also created the academy bringing through players such as - Rio Ferdiand - Man Utd, Michael Carrick - Man Utd, Joe Cole - Chelsea their current clubs. However Redknapp failed at several signings he brought in - Marco Boogers, Florain Raduciou. West Ham won the Intertoto cup while Redknapp was at the club. Redkanpp left the club in 2001 with one game remaining of the season. For sometime it had been unclear wether he resigned or had been sacked. Redknapp later confirmed he had been sacked.

So West Ham failed to match their previous season. However he did win the Intertoto meaning that the club qualified for the UEFA Cup. However he made huge mistakes in the transfer market so again not a great manager yet.

In 2001 Redknapp joined Portsmouth as a director. After the club's poor form he replaced the manager. Redknapp won the team the Championship. Redknapp left the club in 2004 to manage rival club Southampton.

Redknapp failed to keep the Saints in the Premier League. Redkanpp was unhappy at every club with what the respective chairmen had been doing behind his back. So in 2005 Redknapp quit the club.

Bloody hell has the guy not annoyed you yet I'm just typing this but he's already annoying me. I never liked him but I never knew there would be so much to hate. Let's recap:

. FAILED AT BOURNEMOUTH
. AVERAGE AT WEST HAM
. AVERAGE AT PORTSMOUTH [FIRST SPELL]
. FAILED AT SOUTHAMPTON.

OK so what did he do next? In 2005 he rejoined Portsmouth it looked as though another failure was looming for Redknapp as his team went into the relegation zone. However after unbelievable form and some fantastic signings he got his club on a even keel and destroyed threats of relegation. The next season he guided them to ninth place. In 2007 he signed a long term contract. In 2008 he was offered the vacant mangers role at Newcastle but he declined the offer.

So there you go that's it on Harry Redkanpp. I think somewhat after reading this if you thought Redknapp was alright you know now that he is not.

Thanks for reading,
iNath.
